The Downtown Cluster's Geriatric Day Care Center began in 1976, when a group of church visionaries saw the need for
quality care for older persons in the District Of Columbia. The Center, supported by The Downtown Cluster of Congregations
and the D.C. Office on Aging, began as two programs, one at Asbury United Methodist Church, the other here at Mt.
Vernon Place United Methodist Church, initially servicing only a handful of participants and employing just a few
staff.
In 1982, programs were centralized at Mt Vernon Place United Methodist Church. Over the years, innovative
services, creative staff, and loving participants have increased until now personnel number over 25 and
almost 100 seniors are served annually. Programs/services offered range from art therapy, occupational therapy,
recreational therapy to health services of physicians and nurses, to intergenerational activities, to caregivers'
support groups, to a specialized Alzheimer's program and many more. The Center's 29 year success and track record
of effectiveness are based on a combination of a staff dedicated to the elderly, visionary leadership, and community
support.
